HELP format Page Heading

I dont usually use page headers for this reason. I usually put my headings
within the body of the report however it doesnt seem to be working properly
with this matrix so I am going to use a true page header and I am having
trouble because I need to reference fields from the database in the header.
Here is my expression:
=eSLRReporting.MultiLanguage.TranslateText( Parameters!Language.Value
,"Title") & Parameters!MetricCode.Label & vbcrlf &
eSLRReporting.MultiLanguage.TranslateText( Parameters!Language.Value
,"ReportPeriod") & format(CDate(Parameters!StartDate.Value), "MM-dd-yyyy")
& " - " & format(First (Fields!MAXDATE.Value, "GR01_10"),"MM-dd-yyyy")
It is complaining about the MAXDATE value however I need that value and it
comes from the query result. There is probably a way around this ... I just
dont deal with headers so I have never encountered this "rule" of fields
cannot be used in headers or footers.You can't directly put values from a dataset into the page header or footer,
but you can use report paramters to do this.
Create a report parameters for each query field that you want to put in the
header. Setup the parameter to be populated by the appriopriate field.
Then use textboxes that get their value form an expression to put the data
in the header.

Help for licensing and proper product for us.

Hi,
I read the licensing page, but still i'm confused ... as always with
licensing stuff.
I have a VB 6.0 application (.exe) that establish the connection to my
Access database, but we might want to switch to SQL Server2000 in a near
future.
Our situation
Maximum # of users to use my VB application will be 20. That means I will
deploy my VB app on 20 computers. BUT my VB application will always logon to
the database using the same user.
What would be the best licensing model for me considering all these facts?
1- Connection established from a VB application interface.
2- 20 computers will run the VB application
3- On the 20 computers running the VB app, the SQL user to establish the
connection will always be the same. So only 1 user.
Few more users won't use the VB app and will connect to the database from
the Entreprise Manager (2-3 users)
SQL Server...
Entreprise or Standard. I wonder if standard can do the job for us, it is a
lot cheaper. I think yes. What's the big difference between the two? We
don't need the super big thing here.
Thanks for helping.
Dominic.
SQL User = End user for licensing. A license User is not the same as a
connection or a login. Count the TOTAL number of users that access the
data. That is how many CALs you need. If the CAL cost exceeds a
per-processor license, purchase a per-processor license.
Your VB application is considered "middleware" or a "user aggregator" for
licensing purposes. As such you remove it from consideration entirely.
Enterprise vs. Standard Edition SQL choice should be based on which features
you need. IMHO a decent application with 20 or fewer users should work just
fine on Standard Edition.

|||Ok.
So if I have 1 computer accessing the data. But 3 users can be working on
that computer.
The cheaper and legal licensing model for me would be to go with the Server
Plus Device CAL, right? And would only buy 1 license.
-- ON THE OTHER HAND --
If I have 3 computers accessing the data, but only 1 user can be working on
that computer.
Than I would go with the Server Plus User CAL, right? And again would only
buy 1 license.
For Server Licensing.
I'm not familiar with SQL Server and won't be my task to administrate it.
But if I want 2 or more instances of database ( Production, QA, Development
). Is this all reside on the same server installation so only 1 server
license is enough.
Or I can only install 1 database on a machine(production) and other(qa &
dev) would need to be on other machine? So I would need 3 server licenses?
I guess I can have multiple instances on only 1 computer, but I only want to
make sure. This technical stuff is not my field of expertise.
Thanks.

help- expressions appearing on second page?

i have a list which is hidden at the top of my body and then some text boxes afterwards...this should all fit on the first page, but as soon as one of my textboxes has an expression the rest of the data skips to the second page

Right click the list and select properties. If "insert a page break before this list" or "insert a page break after this list" are checked, then uncheck them.

|||

both are unchecked, it is breaking at any textbox containing an expression....so the first page has the first few textboxes that only have text

|||

please i need help with this, why do text boxes with expressions appear on the second page, but only the ones after my list, if i put one before the list it will display on the first page

Help calling DTS package.

I'm new to using DTS packages and I'm running into a problem. Hopefully someone can help me out. I have an ASP.NET page that needs to call a DTS package. Everything seems to be working right up until I call opkg.Execute. The package seems to run but nothing happens. After further investigation I have found what looks like a permissions issue. this is the message I'm getting"
Error Number:
-2147467259 {Integer}

Error Description:
"The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file ''. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data." {String}

This is obviously a permissions issue. I'm just not sure who the DTS package is running as and where to set the permissions.

Any ideas??

ThanksAfter a few modifications I'm getting a different error now. But it still is obviously a permissions problem. Everything I've read says set Impersonation equal to true. Unfortunately it already is. Any suggestions from you SQL Server gurus?

"Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."

Help : Table Corrupt

Can not truncate or drop a table.
DBCC CHECKTABLE on the table returns the following message:
"Table Corrupt: IAM page (1:25040) (object ID 38016033,
index ID 0) is out of the range of this database."
Our version is Microsoft SQL Server 7.00 - 7.00.623
Can this corrupt other tables?
Thanks.Here are the general recommendations for handling a suspect or corrupt
database:
0. Ensure you have a backup strategy that you can use to recover from
hardware failures (including corruption). I recommend performing both
database and log backup in most situations.
1. If you can run DBCC CHECKDB against the database: Search Books Online and
KB for the error numbers that CHECKDB gives you. There might be specific
info for that type of error.
2. Find out why this happened. Check eventlog, do HW diagnostics etc.;
search Books Online and KB for those errors. You don't want this to happen
again! If the database is suspect, the file might have been in use by for
instance an anti-virus program and restarting SQL Server might be all that
is needed - but you still want to read logs etc to find out what happened.
3. If there is a hardware problem, ensure the faulty hardware is replaced.
4. Backup the log. This assumes that log backup schedule is in place, of
course. If the database is suspect, then the NO_TRUNCATE option for the
RESTORE command must be used. Also, you might want to do a file backup of
the mdf and ldf files, for extra safety.
5. Restore is the best thing to do now. If you managed to backup log as per
step 4, then you will most probably have zero dataloss. You should restore
the latest clean database backup and the subsequent log backups including
the one taken in above step.
If the database isn't suspect, then DBCC with a REPAIR option might be a
secondary option but this will often result in loss of data. Additional
solutions, depending on the errors, may be to manually rebuild non-clustered
indexes, manually drop and reload a table if the data is static, and so on.
If the database is suspect, a secondary option can be to try to "un-suspect"
the database using sp_resetstatus. Read about it (books online, KB, google
etc). It might help but if the database is too damaged, it might just pop
back to suspect again. There's also something called "emergency mode" which
is a "panic" status you can set in order to try to get data out of a damaged
database. I think the name of that option speaks for itself. Again search
the net for info.
If you feel uncertain with above steps, I recommend letting MS hand-hold you
through the steps appropriate for your particular situation.

Help : ASP var at SQL line

Hi,

I try to insert the date parameter on SQL line.
The date parameter is on ASP var declares.

I'm working with the page that have listbox, and gridview bound to msaccess.
when the user select thelistbox with other value, the page will reload.
while the page reload on server, it carry the variable that should insert on sql line,
for displaying the difference gridview records result.
So I have dynamic gridview records base on my listbox.

But, ... the page doesn't load well from the beginning. Doesn't work at all !!

I declare this at the page load.

Dim StartProjectAsString ="1/1/1996"

Sub ProjectListBox_SelectedIndexChanged(ByVal senderAsObject,ByVal eAs EventArgs)Handles PYear.SelectedIndexChanged
StartProject = PYear.SelectedValue.ToString
EndSub

The object "Pyear" is listbox :

<asp:ListBoxID="PYear"runat="server"Rows="12"CssClass="tb01"SelectionMode="Single"AutoPostBack="True">
<asp:ListItemValue="1/1/1991">1991-1995</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItemValue="1/1/1996"Selected="True">1996-2000</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItemValue="1/1/2001">2001-2005</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItemValue="1/1/2006">2006-2010</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItemValue="1/1/2011">2011-2015</asp:ListItem>
</asp:ListBox>

And the datasource for bound to gridview is

<asp:AccessDataSourceID="AccessDataSource1"runat="server"DataFile="~/App_Data/general.mdb"
SelectCommand='SELECT TBL_PROJECT.NAMEPROJECT AS Name, TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT AS Start, TBL_PROJECT.ENDPROJECT AS Finish, TBL_PROJECT.JOBNO AS JobNo, TBL_PROJECT.CLIENT AS Client, TBL_PROJECT.BUILDING AS Building, TBL_PROJECT.CODEPROJECT AS Code, TBL_PROJECT.IDPROJECT AS IDPROJECT FROM TBL_PROJECT WHERE TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT >= DateValue("<%=StartProject%>") And TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT < DateValue("1/1/2001");'>
</asp:AccessDataSource>

It will return the error page regarding the ASP : StartProject.
If I change the variable with the string "1/1/1996" :

'SELECT TBL_PROJECT.NAMEPROJECT AS Name, TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT AS Start, TBL_PROJECT.ENDPROJECT AS Finish, TBL_PROJECT.JOBNO AS JobNo, TBL_PROJECT.CLIENT AS Client, TBL_PROJECT.BUILDING AS Building, TBL_PROJECT.CODEPROJECT AS Code, TBL_PROJECT.IDPROJECT AS IDPROJECT FROM TBL_PROJECT WHERE TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT >= DateValue("1/1/1996") And TBL_PROJECT.STARTPROJECT < DateValue("1/1/2001");

it will work fine, but I will miss my dynamic gridview, right ?

So, please ... help me ...

Thank you ...

Help (require code)

right im programming a database program and i need some code. (the database is in sql/msde)
This is what i am attempting to do:
I have a page with textboxes on it with buttons at the bottom
i need to program the database with the add function

this is the code that i have already
Imports system.data.sqlclient

'You need two objects

Dim conn as new sqlconnection
dim comm as new sqlcommand

conn.connectionstring = "Your UDL String here"
comm.text = "insert into books (isbn, title, author, publisher, description, price,)
'books is the name of the databse
values ( '1234' , 'Title', 'Author', 'Publisher' )
conn.open
comm.connection = conn
comm.executenonquery
comm.close
conn.close

now i think i need to insert this at the top of the page but im not 100% sure (btw i have the udl string)

so what do i need to add to this code to make the page submit data that has been enterd into textboxes into a database table(sql/msde) on the click of the button?

thanks for any help providedI think you need to read some very simple getting started tutorials. What you've asked is very, very easy and to be honest shows that you've not really got any kinda' grip on this stuff. The totorials on this forum should sort you out - it'll take you 30mins to learn this, honest. Sorry if this sounds a bit cruel by you'll get no where fast by cribbing blocks of code without understand it.

HELP ! Carried Foward / Brought Forward

In my detail section I would like to have a report that has a "Carried
Forward" amount as a total for the page and then on the next page header the
value as "Brought Foward" this will total up at the page footer and be
"Carried Forward" to next page and so on until the last page where "Carried
Foward" wouldn't be shown but "Brought Foward" would.
Does anyone have any expamples as this a pretty common requirement for
finacial reports / billing. I have been racking my brains over this one but
can't get it to work.
Regards
Toby.You can get the Carried Forward by doing an aggregate of report items in the
page footer (=Sum(ReportItems!SalesTextbox.Value))
However, there's currently no way to get the Brought Forward since the
Previous function is not yet supported in the page header/footer.

previous value by doing something like this:
public shared Previous as integer
public function Carry(value as integer)
Previous = value
Carry = value
end function
Textbox in page footer: =Code.Carry(Sum(ReportItems!textbox7.Value))
Textbox in page header: =Code.Previous
Since the custom code/classes get instantiated separately for each page
request, you'd have to do this as a shared member variable.
And due to the shared member variable, if two people run the report at the
same time, it would smash the Previous counter.
But if you're really motivated, you could make the Previous shared member
variable a hash table based on user id, at which point you'd only have
problems if the same user ran the report more than once at the same time.
Textbox in page footer: =Code.SetCarry(Sum(ReportItems!textbox7.Value),
User.UserID)
Textbox in page header: =Code.GetCarry(User.UserID)

Help - Update Field in SQL Server

I am trying to write a password change page for my website. I want logged in users to be able to change their password which is stored in a SQL table. I was able to get the following code to work

Dim myCommand As New SqlCommand( _
"cmdChangePassword @.Email='"+request("email")+"', @.OldPassword='"+TextBox1.text+"',@.NewPassword='"+TextBox3.text+"'", myConnection)

This information is passed to a stored procedure which updates the table. However, I want to have a return value that shows that the password was changed. I changed the code as follows:

Dim myCommand As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("cmdChangePassword", myConnection)
myCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.email", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50).Value = request("email")

Dim myParm1 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.OldPassword", SqlDbType.VarChar, 20)
myParm1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParm1.Value = "+TextBox1.text+"

Dim myParm2 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.NewPassword", SqlDbType.VarChar, 20)
myParm2.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParm2.Value = "+TextBox3.text+"

With this new code the password is not being changed. However, I am not receiving any errors.

BDyou can check your db if the pwd is being changed, to see if the sp is working properly.

(1) in your SP, you can return an integer 0/1 for success or failure and appropriately throw a msgbox saying pswd has been changed.
and modify your code slightly and have an output parameter.

or
(2) query the db again with username=@.username and pwd=@.newpswd and see if you get any records. to make sure you get the xact record you can add more conditions. so if you do get a record, then the db has been updated with the new pswd.

apparently, this one requires an xtra trip to the db.

HTH|||The SP is set to return the integer. I haven't added that code yet. I have tested the SP and know that it works. However, the password is not being changed. The email address, old password and new password need to be passed to the SP. As long as the email address and old password match, the password will be changed. I am assuming there is something wrong with my code and that those items are not being passed successfully.|||heres an example of the code that i am using

Dim myConnection As SqlConnection
Dim myCommand As SqlCommand
Dim myParameter As SqlParameter
Dim myDataReader As SqlDataReader
myConnection = New SqlConnection("server=local;database=Northwind;Integrated Security=SSPI ")
myCommand = New SqlCommand()
myCommand.Connection = myConnection
myCommand.CommandText = "finalize_movein"
myCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
'input parameter
myParameter = myCommand.CreateParameter()
myParameter.ParameterName = "@.userid"
myParameter.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParameter.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.int
myParameter.Value = id
myCommand.Parameters.Add(myParameter)

'output parameter:
myParameter = myCommand.CreateParameter()
myParameter.ParameterName = "@.finalcnum"
myParameter.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
myParameter.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.int
myCommand.Parameters.Add(myParameter)

' Open the connection to the SQL Server
myConnection.Open()
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

return convert.toint32((myCommand.Parameters("@.finalcnum").Value))
myconnection.close

and have your SP defined like this :

CREATE PROCEDURE finalize_movein (@.userid int ,@.finalcnum bigint OUTPUT) as
begin...

HTH|||BD - please wrap your code in CODE tags to make it distinguishable from your comments.

It looks to me that your problem is in the way you are setting your parameter values. For some reason you have surrounded them with double quotes(") and plus signs(+). Remove those and you should have better luck. I changed the way you were setting up your @.email parameter to make it more consistent with the rest of your code, plus I added a ReturnValue parameter:

Dim myCommand As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("cmdChangePassword", myConnection)
myCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

Dim myParm0 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.ReturnValue", SqlDbType.Integer)
myParm0.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

Dim myParm1 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.email", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50)
myParm1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParm1.Value = request("email")

Dim myParm2 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.OldPassword", SqlDbType.VarChar, 20)
myParm2.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParm2.Value = TextBox1.text

Dim myParm3 As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.NewPassword", SqlDbType.VarChar, 20)
myParm3.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input
myParm3.Value = TextBox3.text

|||That worked! Thanks for your help!

Brian|||Sorry, I have one more question. I am now able to change the password. However, I want to display a message to the user that the password has been changed. I have the following variable defined.

Code

Dim Result As SqlParameter = myCommand.Parameters.Add("@.ReturnValue", SqlDbType.Int)

Result.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

myCommand.Connection.Open()
myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

if Result.Value>0 then MSG.text= "Your password has been changed"

myCommand.Connection.Close()

End Code

In my html I have the following:

Any ideas what I am missing?

Brian|||Normally, the ReturnValue will be 0 if there are no errors. I don't know what your stored procedure looks like, but assuming it follows normal practice, this line:

if Result.Value>0 then MSG.text= "Your password has been changed"
should be this:
if myCommand.Parameters("@.ReturnValue").Value=0 then MSG.text= "Your password has been changed"

HELP - Running a Report with Dynamic Query from a web page

Here's the situation. I have a report that uses a dynamic query to select one
or all records from the dataset to display.The query looks like this
="SELECT abunch of fieds" &
"FROM a view" &
iif(Parameters!orgid.value = 0,"","WHERE organization_id = " &
Parameters!orgid.value)
Essentially if the report parameter (orgid) = 0 then get all records, if
it's something other than 0, get the specified record.
The report is called from an ASP web application which builds the required
URL depending on the organization selected. The URL looks like this:
"http://webserver/reporting/pages/report.aspx?ItemPath=pathtoreport/report&rc:Parameters=false&orgid=123
In the browser, the HTML (I guess) viewer opens, displays the Parameter bar,
prompts me for a orgid and sits there.
I don't want the Parameter bar to show, just run the report with the
parameter supplied in the url. What am I doing wrong' Or what am I not doing
right?You have set up the beginning of the url incorrectly.
It should look like this:
http://webserver/reportserver?/pathToReport/ReportName&rc:Parameters=false&orgid=123
See the following msdn article for details:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152835.aspx
Rowen McDermott|||Ah Rowen, if only it were so easy and straightforward. BTW, thanks for the
reply.
When I use the method described by MS and everybody else who wrote a book on
Reporting Services, this is what happens:
I'm re-directed to the reportserver home page with a URL of
http://<webserver>/<reportserver>/Pages/Folder.aspx. I can see the folder
that contains the report to run, I have an administrative Toolbar and that's
pretty much it. If I browse down to the report, I can click on it, the report
will start and prompt me for an orgid.
Have any other suggestions? I've got the sa who set up Reporting Services
checking on her end to see if she can get the report to run as advertised.
Thanks again.
The only way I've gotten the report to start is the method I first described.

In that case I'm afraid I cant help you. The method I described above
worked for me, so I can't say what is going on in your case.
I would suggest testing a very basic report with no parameters using
the microsoft documented method and see if it displays the report or
re-directs you to the report server home page.

HELP - Page break after 2 groups, 2 groups per page

I have a requirement to condense my report length. Each group is about 40%
of the page length, so 2 per page would fit nicely...
...but I can't figure out a way. For performance reasons, I have the data
filtered in the table object.
I have tried several things:
1. (Runningvalue(Fields!StoreID.Value,CountDistinct,nothing)-1) \ 2 counts
my groups correctly, but I am not able to use it RunningValue in a SRS
grouping.
2. Created a counter with code found in this newsgroup. This also counts my
groups correctly, and I can use it in a Group, but it doesnt seem to help me
no matter where I put the IncrelentCounter or GetCounter statements.
Public GroupRowCounter As Integer = 0
Function IncrementCounter() As Integer
GroupRowCounter += 1
Return GroupRowCounter
End Function
Function GetCounter() As Integer
Return GroupRowCounter
End Function
3. I've tried putting the Increment in group2 and the Get in group1, and
that didnt help. I tried putting the increment in group1 and the get in
group2 and nothing changes. I admit I may be putting the Increment and Get in
the wrong places, but I can't seem to see it.
Can anyone help me?Ok, I found a way, and thought I'd shart

1. Placed code below in the Code section of your report properties:
Public GroupRowCounter As Integer = 0
Public GroupName as string =""'
Function IncrementCounter(strGroup as string) As string
if GroupName <> strGroup then
GroupRowCounter += 1
GroupName = strGroup
end if
Return (GroupRowCounter -1)\2
End Function
2. In the dataset for you Report, add a calculated field, I called mine
Grouper.
3. Code.IncrementCounter(Fields.TheOneYoureTryingToGroupNperPage.value)
4. On your report, add a group immideately above the group level you want
per page using Grouper. Set page break at end.
5. Remove page breaks from any internal grouping that no loner need them.

Help - not a valid MIMEType

I am trying to use an image with a "Web" source, the url points to an
aspx page on the same machine as the reporting server, this page
returns a jpeg image (a chart) created by some C# code. On the
"Layout" tab of VS.NET the image is displayed but when I switch to the
"Preview" tab I just get the dreaded Red X.
The following warnings are written to the Output window.
Images with external URL references will not display if the report is
published to a report server without an UnattendedExecutionAccount or
the target image(s) are not enabled for anonymous access.
The value of the MIMEType property for the image ?image1' is
"image/jpeg; charset=utf-8", which is not a valid MIMEType.
I have configured the UnattendedExecuionAccount (rsconfig -e...) and
the page which returns the image allows anonymous access but it
doesn't seem to make any difference. What I don't understand is the
message about the invalid MIMEType, the code which returns the image
sets the ContentType="image/jpeg".
Any help much appreciated.Make sure you are using RS SP1

I have SP1 installed (did it again to make sure!). The problem does
not occur when displaying external images that come from a file, but
only when they are returned from code (in an aspx.cs module). I am
beginning to think it could be some kind of security/permission
problem, but I don't know where to look for more info on this. for
example the following url will work
http://10.34.3.76/Trending/myImage.jpg
but this one doesn't
http://10.34.3.76/Trending/getImage.aspx
Any ideas ?

chart via an aspx web page to perform advanced charting that RS charting can
not do. If I can not get this to work, I do not know how I will be able to
generate the charts that I need within the report. Just as Mark gets, I get
the MIME type error in the preview, a red X when viewed through RS, but the
designer show the image. I have setup Unattended Execution and that made a
slight difference in that the image dimensions were set, but no image.
Please help, I am at wits end.

show up in the designer but not the preview or the full report (with
SP1)
I noticed the error said the invalid mime type was "image/jpeg;
charset=utf-8" or similar
So on the aspx file that returned the jpeg, right below
response.contenttype="image/jpeg"
I added:
response.charset=""
and now the images appear on the report! Looks like reporting services
isn't parsing the HTTP headers correctly...

HELP - my virtual directory is not working!

When I follow carefully the instruction inside the book,
I cannot access my virtual directory through url query
(404 page not found error). I am sure that I have allowed
the virtual directory to be queried through url. No
matter where I create the actual path to my virtual
directory, I still got error.
Before setting up the virtual directory, I can access the
files in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\mydb through url, but after
setting up the virtual directory, what I can get is only
404 error. Could anyone help'What I typed is:
http://myservername/mydb?
sql=select+*+from+tablename+for+xml+uto+root=ROOT
I've got a file named index.htm in
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\mydb, before settting it as virtual

help

i have a list which is hidden at the top of my body and then some text boxes afterwards...this should all fit on the first page, but as soon as one of my textboxes has an expression the rest of the data skips to the second page

Right click the list and select properties. If "insert a page break before this list" or "insert a page break after this list" are checked, then uncheck them.

|||

both are unchecked, it is breaking at any textbox containing an expression....so the first page has the first few textboxes that only have text

|||

please i need help with this, why do text boxes with expressions appear on the second page, but only the ones after my list, if i put one before the list it will display on the first page
